Hamlet 2011 and Schad

Everyone remembers the modern take on Shakespeare's most well-known lovely story, Romeo and Juliet. Leo Dicaprio and Claire Danes starred in the artsy, avant-guarde version and definitely captured the viewers hearts as the film will always remain as a part of our pop-culture and highschool memories.
In similar fashion, the Ottawa Shakespeare Company (OSC) will present its remix of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The production will be the first to preview the brand-new Centrepointe Studio Theatre from April 26 to May 7, 2011, before the venue’s official opening in the fall of 2011. Hamlet 2011, directed by Charles McFarland  and starring Michael Mancini as Hamlet.

Play runs : April 26 - 30 & May 3-7
Reserved seats, $33.75. General admission seating, $25.75.
I will be giving away two tickets to the play to the first reader to answer the following question:
Who Played Ophelia in the 1990 version of Hamlet starring Mel Gibson?
Either email or comment below, I will announce the winner tomorrow on the blog. Good Luck!

Costumes for the play were supplied in part by Schad, a local shop catering to fashion savvy men and women of Ottawa as well as tourists from all around the world . I recently had the honor of interviewing Chantal Biro, Co-owner of Schad and Schad Blu. Check out the how they came to be involved with the production of Hamlet 2011 and find out what she thinks are the hottest trends for this spring.
1. What brands & styles can we expect to see during the play?
We dressed "Hamlet" for two different looks that reflect two distinct periods of the play. For his first more casual look, he will be wearing a pair of anti-fit denim by Diesel Black Gold, a J. Lindeberg waxed cotton jacket, a Religion tee, a Diesel zippy and fabulous boots by Creative Recreation. For his second, sleeker look, he will be wearing skinny denim by Canadian brand Naked + Famous, a clean white collared shirt + slim jacket by another Canadian brand, Haight & Ashbury and a very cool pair of pointed, black leather sneakers by Energie.

2. What played a role in your selection of the wardrobe?
Wardrobe selection was mostly chosen to reflect a very contemporary Hamlet set in modern day Europe. We were particularly influenced by this Spring's style campaign by Diesel Black Gold (euro-clean-grunge!) as well as by Denham, a new line we carry for men and women from Amsterdam. For example, Hamlet's first look is a very forward street look, not one that you will necesarily see on the streets of downtown Ottawa but one that you would definitely see on thre streets of Paris, London, Milan, Amsterdam or Copenhagen. Anti-fit denim tucked into a higher motocross-style boot is definitely more common in European cities. His second look is very sleek with very skinny black denim in lieu of a trouser and clean sneakers instead of dress shoes. We also had to choose cuts and silhouettes that flattered the actor's body as well as items that would be appropriate on stage with the effect of bright lights, etc.

3. How did Schad become involved with this play and what made you want to get involved?
It did not take much convincing for us to agree to dress Hamlet! Michael Mancini, the actor playing Hamlet is a good customer at schad blu as well as a good friend so it was hard to refuse but we mainly saw it as a great way to support the arts in this citynot to mention just a fun opportunity. It was great working with Michael and his costume designer. Apart from giving us some guidelines as to the character's needs in terms of clothing, they truly gave us carte blanche as to selecting his looks and trusted our views as to what would really make Hamlet's looks edgy, forward and euro.

4. What do you think of the local fashion scene and how does Schad cater to it?
People still refer to Ottawa as very conservative but we've truly seen the fashion scene improve thanks to the evolving social scene, great venues and restaurants and the availability of well-sought after lines. Every season, we experiment by introducing different collections...some work, some are too forward, but thankfully, because of our location in the Byward Market, we do benefit much from the business of tourists. We have definitely seen young men step it up in the fashion scene. Of course, the internet and fashion blogs definitely have had a strong influence on customers' sense of fashion and what they are seeking. We spend alot of time travelling to various cities and the better tradeshows to have access to the most in-demand lines and latest looks.

5. What is every girls’ / guys’ must have item this spring?
Our favourite Girls' Must-Have Items for Spring: 70's style high-waisted wide leg denim (J Brand) in indigo or white; neutral-coloured wedged platform sandals; and oversized blushed-toned shirt; anything striped.

Our favourite Guy's Must-Have Items for Spring: striped anything, we always love a crisp + clean white shirt, slim-leg pants rolled in a cuff, the boat/deck shoe or desert boot, the bomber jacket.

Pinkies Up

Last Thursday was an amazing day! Although some snow flakes were falling outside, bright spring dresses and fabulous hats were being flaunted. With the Royal Wedding fast approaching The Royal ParTea, hosted by Fashion Television's Jeanne Beker, was the most perfectly appropriate fundraiser for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
Pre Party: Pink Champagne was being passed around the room as guests entered the gorgeous venue. Bright white decor with crystal accents and pink lighting was (as Jeanne would say) "so very swish". The Governor's Foot Guards lined the passage from the pre-party space to the fabulous tea party room.
The venue:  The bright pink accents in a crisp white room, so so chic!! Everything was so well planned even down to the tiniest detail. Every tea cup was an original and every single sugar cube was decorated with a super small sugar flower. The venue was truly made for royalty! The guests were so impressed with all the efforts and everyone definitely had an amazing afternoon.
The event: The precious tea time snacks and desserts at The Royal Partea was catered by Thyme and Again. Everyone fully indulged in the decadent treats while CTV's Carol Anne Meehan passionately spoke about her experience with cancer in her family. The event was not a sad one in any way, it was more of a fabulous celebration of life and and great way to raise money for an incredible cause. Over 20,000$ was raised that day, along with over-and-above contributions from the generous Jeanne Beker.
Jeanne Spoke about her life, fashion and of course the Royal Wedding.

Fashion show: A mini fashion show went on during the Partea. Models of MIM walked around the party in the latest looks for spring. Evidently, gorgeous hats and precious dresses were the theme of the day. All looks were provided by St Laurent Center.
Finding Myself in Fashion: The Title of Jeanne Beker's newest book. I obviously ran to get my own copy of the book as soon as found out it was on sale at the event! Jeanne was kind enough to donate some of the proceeds to the Regional Cancer Foundation as well as signing everyone's book. She definitely made my day, She is such a sweet woman!

Oh the Swag Bags!! Guests were so thrilled about the greatest swag bags ever seen! So what goodies were included in these ever-so-fabulous swag bags?

Ottawa Gala 2011

Last Saturday was the yearly Ottawa Gala. The event took place at the government conference center, the old Ottawa train station was the perfect setting to the Midnight in Marrakech theme. Ottawa's young professionals gathered at the gorgeous venue to raise money for the Ottawa School Breakfast program.
Tickets sold for 60$ each , however for the VIP tickets the price was 125$ which allowed us to indulge in the open bar and delicious snacks including poutine martinis !
After 11pm (when the open bar became a cash bar) the VIP section quickly cleared out and everyone moved to the dance floor. I adored the theme ; palm trees, belly dancers, Moroccan food, lanterns, sounds, aromas and so many little details really added to the exotic charm of the night.

Chris , Mayor Jim Watson and Roselle
